Newcastle and England striker Michael Owen will try to get three points today against Portsmouth to celebrate his third child Emily, who was born on Wednesday, in Chester. The win would be a nice birthday present for his daughter, and even more special if three goals come from his feet.
Michael Owen has scored three goals so far for Newcastle, and the last game when he scores was on 3-2 win against Everton when he play as substitution after having a double hernia surgery.
Owen said: “Winning your home games is very important. If you win all your home games, you’re virtually in the UEFA Cup before you even start talking about away points.”
Pompey will come to St. James with their first taste of defeat last Wednesday at home to Blackburn in the Carling Cup fourth round.
Although they are still unbeaten in their last 6 Premier League games, Newcastle United will give the salt on wounds from their Wednesday cup exit.
Owen striking partner for the Saturday’s game, Obafemi Martins, could meet his compatriot Kanu. He said that Kanu has a huge name in their side because he is the captain of Nigeria and also a god in Nigeria. Martins believe the game against Pompey will be one of Newcastle United toughest games of the season.
And to anticipate the game, Sam Allardyce was at the club’s training ground on Friday to put his players through their final paces ahead of Saturday’s showdown. He also confirmed that Mark Viduka will not making appearance because of his calf injury. He will be ready next week for a derby clash with sunderland.
Joe Barton will taste the first St. James’ Park debut while Stephen Carr (hamstring), Damien Duff (ankle) and Peter Ramage (knee) all remains sidelined. Newcastle will also running in for a club record of 3,500 top flight points.
