For the next coming match at Gallowgate Ends, Newcastle gaffer will have to decide which player shirt number to have the chance to partnered his automatic choice of player with the number 36 shirt.
While Michael Owen who is wearing the number ten shirt is opted being ready to make a return again for the team, Obafemi Martins with number nine shirt is also quoted as ready to fight for his place as reguler striker in BSA starting line-up.
Spoking to the Mirror today, Martins said that he would not let the former number nine player, the legendary Alan Shearer, felling down for his successor. “I got it from Alan Shearer when he retired. He tells me to score lots of goals, and I cannot let him or the shirt he gave me down and I have to deserve my place.
“Newcastle United history has several success and bad story about the famous number nine shirt. There was an automatically demand from the Toon Army for anyone who is wearing that number to become the great centre forward that scores many goals for the Magpies.
Since the earlier years, Newcastle have traditionally fielded a famous number nine alongside with their striking partner. From the likes of the big Welshman Wyn Davis and Bobby ’Pop’ Robson, Micky Quinn and Mark McGhee, Peter Beardsley and Andy Cole until the recent one Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand.
“I don’t feel like it is a competition between Michael Owen and me. The important thing is for me to play football.” Added Martins.
More of that Martins says that he and Michael Owen can play together and don’t see any competition between him and Owen. “We have done it in training. I am not the manager but I reckon we can have a partnership even though we are both little and quick.”
Menawhile, Martins also admitted that it was always difficult to have big defenders chasing you down and doing everything to stop him, but he will got more to offer.
No matter what decision to be made by Sam Allardyce tomorrow, the Toon Army can be sure that everyone is willing to fight for their place which is good for the team.
