Sam Allardyce after firmly ruled himself out of the running of being the next England manager, reiterating the point made succinctly above that a big job on Tyneside takes precedence now.
“I am a big patriot, that’s why I wanted it so much before,” he says. “There was no fear on my part that I couldn’t do the job, only an excitement of hopefully being the right man. To be considered, any manager has got to be in a really strong position. Back then, it was a good time to be an English manager, wasn’t it, but we’ve seen how that can change.”
Speaking about his current job at Newcastle. Allardyce told Telegraph.co.uk that he, as an old pro was shocked about the Toon fans reaction when Newcastle get beaten 4-1 against Portsmouth.
“We’d only lost two games on the trot so I found it quite bizarre when there was speculation about my job. It shocked me, that, because it had been Newcastle’s best start in 10 years. A bad spell? I call a bad spell not winning in five.”
At the time, Big Sam didn’t realize the obvious difference between managing Bolton Wanderers and taking charge as the manager of a Geordie institution club.
Newcastle was a city consumed by football. The task of changing that culture of rank under-achievement now towers up like the Angel of the North. Sam Allardyce knows that it’s something that he knows cannot be conquered overnight. Big Sam now facing an impatience of most Toon supporters, the one that’s bigger than he first expected before.
“I don’t want to be chasing instant success because that kind of success is never sustainable. That’s happened here before. This is a big club because of its history and fan base but the infrastructure here hasn’t reached the same level yet. ” Big Sam added more.
“That’s why I talk about sustainable success. The infrastructure has to be built to achieve that. It’s hard to get that across to the fans because they’re not really interested.”
Sam Allardyce knows with the new management take over at Newcastle they will need time to settle things up before they can start spending big money on big players. Until such improved finally done, Big Sam will just have to be practical and start developing the youth setup in order to safeguard the future.
Big Sam end the interview with telegraph by saying that if he don’t get the first team right in the next two or three games, he might never see the benefit.
“But when you consider the amount of work we’ve done since the beginning of June there’s been a huge amount of change to help this football club become successful. That’s what I’m after because I’ve succeeded everywhere else. The last place I want to be unsuccessful is here.”
