United’s under-fire manager Sam Allardyce, still struggles to convince Newcastle fans that he is the right man for the St. James’s Park dug-out. He revealed the words of blessing from our former manager Sir Bobby Robson have helped add steel to his conviction that he can succeed on Tyneside.
“He just told me to stay positive but, then again, Bobby is never anything other than encouraging,” said Allardyce, “There are a lot of people here who know him and were pleased to see him. He talks football 24/7 and I always take the opportunity to speak to Bobby when I get the chance, who doesn’t?”
Allardyce will be able to welcome Steven Taylor and Abdoulaye Faye back for the trip to Blackburn Rovers, while the Brazilian Cacapa also determined to prove he’s as good as he was before having a 11 minutes nightmare against Portsmouth.
“He taught me to put these defeats behind you and not let it affect you, or the players. Most importantly, don’t let it affect the team’s confidence and their performance, you have to have a positive attitude.” Allardyce told the Journal about his meeting with Robson.
“He knows what this club is about, that this is not an easy club to manage, but if you get it right, it is great.”
Allardyce also have a vote of convidence from Alan Smith today. Newcastle’s versatile player insisted that the current crop of Newcastle United players can still take the club “back where they belong” by adopting their attacking style of play back again.
“The best form of defence is attack.” Smith said, “Once you get a few bad results a bit of negativity does creep in. When you concede goals everyone tends to go on the counter-attack and not want to go forward as much because they are worried about what is happening at the back.”
Newcastle have only one away win this season against Bolton at the opening day. By that time, the great attacking style of the Magpies have put an immediate shock to Bolton’s players and we are heading 3 goals up easily before they coming back when we turn the tempo.
Allardyce must be aware of this, and a change of style will be good to surprise the Blackburn side tomorrow. “We started the season well and then we have caused our own problems through individual errors.”
“I’ve heard people say it is our defence, but it is up to the whole team to defend as a unit all over the pitch,” added Smith.
