Sam Allardyce will be relieved after James Milner cross-shots deflected the bottom corner of sunderland posts and get in the net to earn 1-1 draw in a 127th Tyne-Wear derby clash today.
Although Newcastle remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Sh*te, we are being largely outplayed, a fortuitous James Milner strike cancelling out Danny Higginbotham’s first goal for Sunderland. The homeside were the more comfortable in a maelstrom of a match, ensuring the noise in the stands remained urgent and thunderous.
They were dynamic and bold, and retained their confidence after a first quarter of an hour during which they squandered several promising free-kicks and had only two blocked Grant Leadbitter blasters to show for their domination.
But it was once again, a bit of negative football that Sam played today unfortunately almost folded the Newcastle United team, in which will be a record breaking result for the opposite team against Newcastle United. The macKems have had no wins against the Magpies at home since the 1979-1980 season.
Newcastle only looking dangerous for the last of 20 minutes to go, were the Lads secured control of the midfield, with Emre and Barton becoming increasingly influential. And if there’s anything unfortunate for the Magpies team is when Abdoulaye Faye who control the defence well to guard mackem’s striker Jones very well, was replaced by Habib Beye because of the hamstring injury.
After the match interview, Roy Keane admitted that his side were unlucky to have bagged only a point from their arc rival.
“We had the chances to win the game and the beauty of the Premier League is that if you don’t take your chances they come back to haunt you,” said Keane afterwards. “Sam will probably be more happy with that point than me, in fairness.”
While Sam Allardyce said that Newcastle deserved the point because of our response after going a goal down.
“We picked our game up and got going and after we scored and I thought we might get another chance and pick up a winner.”
“Up to that point, Sunderland had outmuscled us and that was disappointing,” he continued. “As for the goal we conceded, well, we just can’t afford to continue giving that sort of goal away. In the end, though, I think it was a fair result.”
I noticed the same comments from Sam Allardyce many times since the defeat from Manchester City last month. He was often said to not continued giving the opponents a short of goal away, but the fact is, the same things always happened in every Newcastle game since, especially last weekend.
Meanwhile, back in the last meeting between the tyne and wear side, Shearer was consoled himself with his last lick as professional footballer, “I had been wanting a penalty for all those years since the one I missed against them, so that was my opportunity,” he said. “I did not know at the time it was going to be probably my last kick of a football.”
Shearer has missed one penalty, when Sorensen denied him to make an equalizer in a 2-1 defeats at St. James’ Park in November 2000. Alan Shearer, will launched his Ultimate Football DVD this week.
