There’s No Rift Between Keegan And Michael Owen

For some of the Toon Army and the gloomy press news, the signing of Kevin Keegan as United boss last Wednesday could be the end of Michael Owen career at Newcastle.

Owen talk about his time under Keegan on his autobiography book was brought up at King Kev Press conference yesterday, but he answer all the speculations about his relationship with the England striker by making him United skipper today against Bolton.

“Not only will Michael be playing, but I’ll make him captain. And that tells you what I think about him.” Keegan told the Chronicle, “He’s the right guy to lead us. I know people will try and make stuff about his book, but people who know me, know it won’t bother me.”

Just like his thought about Owen, Keegan also didn’t see Alan Shearer as his threat if he was making him as his number two at United. Although Keegan hasn’t make any call for Shearer or giving any clue of who will be his assistant, Keegan said he will talking to Shearer if necessary.

“I haven’t considered it – I haven’t had anything to consider, to be honest. He is his own man. As I said, I have got tremendous respect for him. I worked with him as a player at Newcastle and with England.” Shearer said about his chance to be United number two, “I am sure he will do well and whoever he brings in, if anyone, it will be for the benefit of the football club.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle will be without seven key players today for the visit of Bolton on Keegan’s first game in charge. The fact he will have no more than 10 experienced players on his side today won’t bother him at all.

“With suspensions and people away you might only get nine tonight.” He said, “I have done that a couple of times. I had 12 in once and I didn’t get away with that either. But it shows how confident I was.”

And in the same high joy with Keegan’s return, Steven Taylor said he can speak on behalf of the other United players and say that everyone is delighted.

Keegan has given the club a massive lift and the fans showed that – they were absolutely buzzing, and it would liften the roof off today when the lads are walking out of St. James’ tunnel today.
